Praia da Rocha is the most consistent surf spot on Portugal’s south coast, and the calm middle of the beach is the safest place to learn. Your lesson is run by Portimão Surf Clube, an academy founded by national surf champion Francisco Canelas, whose athletes have won regional, national and international titles.
Beginners start with the basics: ocean safety, reading the water, the pop-up, and riding their first whitewater waves. Intermediate and advanced surfers work on line-up positioning, wave selection and style, with coaching that fits their level. Board and wetsuit are included, so you only need to show up.
Want a bigger day? In summer the club also runs sessions on the Costa Vicentina, which stretches from Burgau to Odeceixe inside the Southwest Alentejo Natural Park. Their favourite spot is Vale Figueiras in Aljezur, known for consistent waves and natural beauty.
Duration: approx. 2 hours in the water. Costa Vicentina sessions add a transfer of about 40 minutes.
Location: PTMSC clubhouse, Estrada Marina 280, Portimão (near Praia da Rocha). Costa Vicentina sessions depart from there.
Levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced
Included: surfboard and wetsuit
Season: Costa Vicentina sessions mainly in summer
